Run with Barbi Appelquist
is a 14-year resident of Santa Monica and West Los Angeles, a two-time cancer survivor, a wife, and a mom to a 6-year old girl.
A government affairs and non-profit lawyer who is the great-granddaughter of immigrants, the granddaughter of farmers who didn’t graduate from high school, and a daughter of a career Army officer, Barbi leverages her personal and professional experience in a myriad of efforts towards making our community, state, and nation a better place to live.
Barbi is well versed in the issues facing our community, both from her personal experience and from her time working in the community. She regularly partners with fellow community leaders as well as state and federal government elected officials in the fight to increase the number of women in office, expand the roles and status of women in the workforce, increase the affordability and availability of quality early childhood education and stress the role it has in improving our economy, and advocate for our active and retired Armed Forces and their families. She serves on various nonprofit boards emphasizing gender equality & political participation, including the Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media (Chair of Advisory Board), Hillary for America (Chair of Organizing for Santa Monica), UN Women #TeamHeForShe (Co-Founder & Co-Chair), Santa Monica Child Care & Early Education Task Force (Co-Chair), National Women’s Political Caucus, & Santa Monica Democratic Club. She is honored to be a Political Partner of the Truman National Security Project.
Professionally, she has extensive experience in grassroots community organizing, legal analysis, and business development. Prior to her role as a nonprofit lawyer working on social justice film/television projects, she has worked as a management consultant with PricewaterhouseCoopers, a corporate lawyer with Glaser Weil & Shapiro, and as a nonprofit and community development lawyer with Public Counsel. She is also a two-time cancer survivor and a vocal supporter of the Affordable Care Act. In her spare time, Barbi trains for half-marathons while raising funds for various cancer-related and veterans charities, including the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, Stand Up 2 Cancer, Camp Kesem, LA Loves Alex’s Lemonade Stand, the Three Wise Men Veterans Foundation, New Directions for Veterans, and Got Your 6. Barbi is an alumna of Barnard College, UC Hastings College of the Law, & Pepperdine School of Public Policy & also contributes to Huffington Post.
